The grillage lifting cranes are a pair of purpose-built fixed jib cranes that are bolted to the existing bridge deck. The cranes cantilever about 6.4 m out from the end of the partially erected bridge deck. This is a sufficient distance to enable the new deck grillage to be hoisted vertically from a barge in the river and then bolted to the end of the previously erected deck section.
